Rachel’s Story: Creating a space where mental health comes first
01/08/2025
Whilst working as a senior manager in the NHS, I began looking for an opportunity to develop my professional skills while also giving back to a cause that’s deeply personal to me.
Going through pregnancy and early motherhood during lockdown, I struggled with my own mental health and leaned on a community of mothers who were navigating the same challenges.
When I came across the opportunity at Manchester Mind during the height of the pandemic, I immediately recognised how critical mental health support would become. Long periods of isolation, combined with the healthcare system’s focus on physical health, meant mental wellbeing was at risk of being overlooked.
In my role as Vice Chair, and now as Chair of the Board of Trustees, I’m able to play a meaningful part in shaping the organisation’s direction. I contribute to financial and strategic decisions that allow Manchester Mind to support thousands of people every year including new mothers.
Our board is made up entirely of volunteers who work behind the scenes, making sure Manchester Mind stays on the right path. We’re responsible for ensuring the charity is operating legally and is financially sustainable.
It’s never easy to make decisions like reallocating funds, but those decisions are necessary to keep the charity running effectively. We do it so that the people who come to us for support aren’t let down, and so that we can continue serving the wider community.
I see the impact of our work in initiatives like peer support groups and Mums Matter. These projects truly reflect what Manchester Mind is all about.
