Mental Health Awareness Week 12-18 May: Community

Mental Health Awareness Week is happening from 12 to 18 May, and this year, we’re supporting the Mental Health Foundation and celebrating the power of community!

At Manchester Mind, we are led by our values, which include belonging and collaboration. From dedicated teams promoting physical health in local communities, to peer support groups, school-based mental health practitioners, and even a community allotment for people to nurture, there’s a wide range of community-based initiatives underway. Community is at the heart of everything we do and it is because of this we truly understand why communities play a vital role in supporting good mental health.

A community is made up of people connected by something they all have in common. A strong community is one that lifts you up, makes you feel safe, and encourages empathy for others. It’s a place that supports you through life’s toughest moments, whether it’s illness, loss, or challenging times. When we feel connected to family, friends, neighbours or local groups, we’re more likely to experience positive wellbeing and thrive. We see this everyday here at Manchester Mind and it is something we are immensely proud of.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we witnessed countless examples of communities uniting — coming together to offer support, spread joy, and care for those who needed it most.

Research shows that people who are socially connected tend to experience fewer mental health problems and enjoy longer, happier, healthier lives.

“Communities can provide us with a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times, and give us purpose” Mental Health Foundation

This week, we invite you to celebrate the communities that lift you up, and to reach out and connect, because no one should face mental health challenges alone. Find out how to get support by joining us here at Manchester Mind.

We would also love to hear from you about what community means to you, especially if you have been part of our community, online or in-person. You can do this by joining us on social media.
