Rachael’s Story: Meeting Mums and Their Babies

Cartoon illustration of teddy bear

I had been wanting to do some volunteer work for a while, but was waiting for the right time and opportunity to come along. The Mums Matter volunteer role sounded like the perfect opportunity for me as I can personally relate to the ups and downs of motherhood having two young children of my own.

I loved attending the face to face sessions and getting to know the mums (and babies!) in person. The sessions were relaxed and created nurturing space where the mums could explore different wellbeing concepts whilst sharing their experiences if they felt comfortable to do so. Even though I was there to support delivery and discussions within the groups, I also really benefited from the course as it was full of amazing content regarding wellbeing for mums.

As we went through the weeks, it felt really rewarding to see the impact the course was having on the mums. I also felt my skills and confidence in course facilitation and peer support grew each session, so it was definitely a win-win situation.

It was a great experience and I look forward to volunteering again in the future.
